After several years of delay, pan India mobile number portability (MNP) will be available from today. With MNP being rolled out,
consumers can retain the same number, but can switch operators. Telecom Minister, Kapil Sibbal said that MNP is a great step forward for the consumers as it widens their choices.
Retain Same Number, Switch Operator
Earlier if consumers wanted to switch operators because of any reason, the major problem was that they needed to change their number in order to avail services of other operators. With MNP being rolled out in the country, that problem has been wiped out. The facility can be enjoyed by both pre-paid and post paid customers as well as subscribers of CDMA and GSM service.
If you are willing to change your subscriber, all you need to do is to send an SMS from your phone to 1900. Your present subscriber will send you an unique porting code which you need to fill in the form of the operator you want to switch too. MNP can be availed for just Rs 19.
Things To Keep In Mind Regarding MNP
However, there are a couple of things consumers need to keep in mind regarding MNP. MNP is applicable only within the same telecom circle. What that means is that if you happen to fall within telecom circle of Kolkata, you can retain your number and switch operators in Kolkata only. You cannot carry the same number in another telecom circle (Mumbai for example). Moreover, for another switch, you need to be with the new operator for at least 90 days.
With MNP being rolled out, service providers will be put under tremendous pressure to roll out better quality of services for consumers in order to retain them.
